This recipe will begin my super quick cook series, at Leigh Carter Personal Training Kelowna we understand that time is sometimes limited and cooking for an hour is simply not an option. We like to off super quick cook solutions to these problems that are nutritionally dense and low in calories. In my house we are always limited on time when cooking so this recipe is a staple and the amount shown will last for a couple of days, for lunches and snacks. As a personal trainer it is very important to me to empathize  with my clients lifestyles and adapt a healthy approach to them, so that they can get the right foods and the right exercise on there time. If your spending your week doing pushups, burpees, squats and lunges then don’t get caught without the right food. If your pushed for time don’t depend on junk food when you could have this prepared, cooked and on your plate in 15-20 minutes, you will then also have enough food for the next few meals. Broccoli Pasta is an awesome healthy alternative to its evil italian counterpart.

Last time I checked, men and women are not a different species. According to that book we may have come from a different planet but anatomically (apart from the baby parts) we are pretty similar. When fitness and strength training I often come across a fairly common perception that women should be training in a completely different way to men and that they should avoid any weight training because they might get to muscular. As I write this I and nodding my head, the simple notion that some people think women should train different and are less capable amazes me. Fortunately with the rise of companies like crossfit the idea that women are less capable is being washed away by an army of lean and mean lady machines. The majority of my clientele are female, this is not something that I chose to do and I do not promote myself as anything other than a personal trainer for humans interested in rising to there potential. However for the last 15 years a large part of my life has been spent training women. I have always treated them in the same way as I train my male clients, at first some of the women question why they are doing the same things as they see me doing myself and with my male clients, but fairly soon they realize that strength and muscle are there new best friend. Hormonally the ladies are very different, this does make them less prone to muscle building, it does not however hinder them in changing there bodes to a solid, functional and strong calorie burning machine. Men have a much higher testosterone level so the muscle they build usually sticks and as long as they are progressive with there training they will slowly get bigger. With progressive, functional strength training women’s bodies shift over to a much higher ratio of muscle to fat, therefore helping them burn more calories and look more toned. Muscle needs food to survive whereas fat is food, so a solid body will allow you to eat a lot more of that healthy nutritious food and with the increase in exercise calories you will never need to be on the starving yourself diet ever again. Training with Leigh Carter Personal Trainer Kelowna & West Kelowna will teach you how to use your body in an effective way, correcting all your imbalances and working towards a more muscular framework. This does not mean that you are going to look like a bodybuilder, it simply means that those wobbly bits will no longer wobble and that thing you couldn’t pick up is now light enough to lift over your head with a smille on your face. Training is fun, effective and simple, you won’t be doing girl pushups you will be doing pushups.

The importance of basic movements

The importance of basic movements

When you learn to write you start with the alphabet, after that simple words can be constructed, after that sentences can be structured and after that complex paragraphs and even perhaps a book! With regards to exercise, the importance of basic movements is essential, most people want to jump in at the deep end and if a persons ego is a contributing factor, how much they are lifting usually plays a part to. The problem here will always present itself very quickly, if you don’t start with the basics and get your essential exercises perfected your progression will always be halted by something that you are unable to perform properly. Imbalances that you didn’t notice due to your poor technique, will become your weakest link and the exercise progression will be halted by something as simple as a tight calf muscle or a lack of lumbar activation. When learning and perfecting your basic movements you will be made aware of all of your weak points, tight areas and general mobility issues. At this point you can address them and then you’re ready start to pile on some more weight to the bar. This might not seem like a very fun thing to do, being that everybody else in the gym is lifting faster, heavier and with more complex movements, but rest assured from this point onwards your progression will not be halted by any weak links and you will become faster and stronger and more powerful with the more effort and time you put in. I fully understand that squatting in the corner with no weights for a few months might not seem very cool but you will be very thankful for the time you put in when you look over at the ego driven show offs lifting badly, getting injured and never progressing. Personal training with Leigh Carter means you will be targeting your weak areas until you have none and then increasing your overall performance far beyond what you thought would be possible.

Creating the right impression to your children is important, if from a young age your family are eating healthy and having fun with exercise it will be something that they take on board with them for the rest of their lives. This process need not be a struggle, simple lifestyle changes and adjustments in your diet can make an enormous difference. Teaching your children from a young age to respect there bodies with good food and exercise will make sure that they have the best chance of a healthy and long life. If you are teaching them this by showing them that you are having fun whilst exercising and that the healthy food on the table is making them stronger, faster and healthier they will follow your advice. However if candy and fatty foods are presented to them as a treat they will forever fall back onto these foods for comfort and reward. I do feel that sweets, chocolate and fatty foods do play a part in growing up, but am of the opinion that they first need to understand about all the good foods in the world and how great they are for you and only then when they can effectively differenciate between good and bad give them the option to occasionally have something that is simply there for taste. Building a foundation in the early years of solid good healthy foods and a regular fun exercise regime is one of the best gifts you can give your child, this can only be taught though if you are also playing the game and eating the good food. At Leigh Carter Personal Training Kelowna and West Kelowna we help lots of families with there health and wellness programmes, one of my favourite family teams are pictured above and below, working out together, and eating healthy.
